Scarlett Johansson portrays the famous Disney Princess CinderellaAcclaimed actress Scarlett Johansson portrays the famous Disney Princess Cinderella in a new image created by world-renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz – one of three images unveiled today to launch Disney Parks “Year of a Million Dreams.” Johansson, clad in a glamorous ball gown and 62-carat, Harry Winston diamond tiara, glides down the palace staircase at the stroke of midnight and unknowingly leaves behind a single glass slipper. Each of Leibovitz’s three “Dreams” images feature a scene, with celebrities playing the role of a Disney Parks character, expressing their own dreams and imagination. The other two images feature singer/actress Beyonce, actor Oliver Platt and singer/songwriter Lyle Lovett in a giant, whirling teacup from Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland,” and international soccer star David Beckham portraying Prince Phillip atop a white steed and slaying a fire-breathing dragon in the climactic scene from Disney’s “Sleeping Beauty.” In addition to the three debut images, Disney Parks has commissioned additional images by Leibovitz featuring more celebrities in fairy tale settings.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Trendsetters and fashion gurus get ready to strut your stuff with a new line of Mickey Mouse ears all dressed up for the summer.

The trendy new Mouse ears come in a variety of vibrant colors and styles to suit the pirate or princess in your family. Gal versions don pink veils, jeweled princess crowns, or wild cheetah prints. For the boys, pirate scarves and hoop earrings adorn the headgear, plus Stitch-themed offerings and more. There’s also gold-sequined, patriotic-themed, and a bride and groom version.

While traditional black Mouse ears remain popular — with millions sold each year — it was time to have some fun and accessorize, said Dara Trujillo, Walt Disney World manager of merchandise franchise and synergy.

“Guests responded so well to the special golden Mickey Mouse ears created for the ‘Happiest Celebration on Earth’ last year,” said Trujillo. “We wanted to build off that success with a new generation of ears that reflect what’s hot in the marketplace.”

We will always go after the trends,” Trujillo said.

The new Mouse ears are available in limited quantities at select locations throughout Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resort. Prices are from $8.

Inside Experimental Greenhouses to Grow One-of-a-Kind Plants

Epcot tomato plant sets a new world record

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Behind the brightly colored, mosaic facade of The Land pavilion at Epcot sits non-descript offices where greenhouse magic takes place. Horticulture and entertainment — which some call “horti-tainment” — blend to create some of the most visually interesting fruits and vegetables found under one roof anywhere in the world.

From Mickey Mouse-shaped food and tons of tomatoes to Cinderella pumpkins and lemons the size of bowling balls, the Epcot Science team at The Land works night and day to cultivate produce and other foods on the pavilion’s Living with the Land attraction to give guests something they can’t see anywhere else. Living with the Land, a narrated, 14-minute boat ride through the farms of yesteryear as well as the greenhouses of tomorrow, showcases the team’s research and work inside The Land’s four greenhouses.

Some of the horticulture highlights:

A world record harvest from a single tomato vine: Yong Huang, Epcot’s manager of agricultural science at The Land pavilion, is working with a new “tomato tree” that is currently growing inside the theme park’s experimental greenhouses. The only one of its kind in the United States, the plant yields thousands of tomatoes at one time from a single vine. Huang discovered the plant while on vacation in Beijing, China. After meeting with scientists responsible for that plant, Huang brought its seeds to Epcot and created a specialized greenhouse for the fruit to grow. The golf ball-sized tomatoes are harvested and served at Walt Disney World Resort.

So far, the massive plant has produced a world-record harvest of more than 20,000 tomatoes with a total weight of more than 850 pounds — and it’s still growing! The record-setting plant can be seen by park guests during the Living with the Land boat ride.

Mickey Mouse-shaped cucumbers: The Land Science team developed a special, elongated mold that is placed around a young cucumber. As it grows, the vegetable forms the familiar shape of Mickey’s silhouette. The cucumbers are harvested and served atop salads at Walt Disney World Resort.

Mickey Mouse-shaped watermelons: Building on the success of the Mickey cucumber, the team created a similar mold for watermelons. Guests on the Living with the Land attraction often see the Mickey Mouse-shaped watermelons growing on the vines inside the greenhouses.

Mickey Mouse-shaped pumpkins: Autumn brings the biggest harvest of pumpkins at The Land, and Mickey Mouse-shaped pumpkins have quickly become a favorite. The Mickey Mouse-shaped pumpkins –some which weigh nearly 100 pounds — are harvested and placed inside the greenhouses for guest viewing. Also featured: the Cinderella pumpkin, named for the shape it shares with Cinderella’s famous coach.

Nine-pound lemons: While they’re not Mickey Mouse shaped, the nine-pound lemons grow to what their descriptive name implies — a lemon that weighs nine pounds. These sour mammoths begin as young, green fruit on trees inside the greenhouse. As they mature, they take on the familiar lemony-yellow hue and preserve all of the taste of smaller variety lemons.

“Cucumber tree”: Similar in concept to the “tomato tree,” The Land’s “cucumber tree” has produced more than 800 individual fruits. That’s more than 525 pounds of cucumbers.

Guests on the Living with the Land attraction also see:

The Tropics Greenhouse, growing crops native to Southeast Asia, Africa, Latin America and the southern United States. Rice, sugar cane, peanuts, cacao, bananas and a 59-foot peach palm flourish under a 60-foot dome.

The Aquacell, showcasing crops that swim — fish and other aquatic life including alligators, catfish, tilapia, sunshine bass and American eel.

The Temperate Greenhouse, featuring the concepts and technologies of sustainable agriculture, including intercropping, integrated pest management and specialized irrigation systems that reduce waste and increase crop production.

The Production Greenhouse, where tons of tomatoes, peppers, lettuce and other vegetables are grown for use in The Land’s Garden Grill Restaurant and other Epcot restaurants. The Land scientists utilize growing systems that are kinder to the environment and improve productivity.

The Creative House, showing imaginative ways to grow crops — without soil, hanging in the air, even on a space station. USDA scientists currently are working at The Land to develop dwarf pear trees for greater production efficiency.

“Behind the Seeds” greenhouse tour: Guests interested in taking a closer look at the four greenhouses and fish farm that are part of the Living with the Land attraction can take the 45-minute “Behind the Seeds” tour. Tour highlights include tasting produce grown in The Land, taking an herb and spice challenge, feeding fish at the fish farm, sprouting seeds to take home and releasing ladybugs.

Cost is $12 for guests ages 10 and over, and $10 for guests ages 3-9. Same day reservations may be made at the tour desk on the lower level of The Land or guests may book a tour in advance by calling 407/WDW-TOUR (407/939-8687).

Cinderella suite has its first visitors!

It looks like the Cinderalla suite is vacant no more. A Michigan family that gave itself a Walt Disney World vacation for Christmas this year got an additional gift on Thursday. They were randomly chosen to recieve the key to the brand-new guest suite at Cinderella Castle.
Lisa and Jim Fouch and their children Brad, 16, and Hannah, 8, were randomly picked to be the first family to have the castle to themselves for the night. How did they win? Apparently, Disney has a computer that randomly draws its winners. This award happened to be for the debut castle stay to whoever was sitting in seat eight in row two of simulator four in the Star Tours ride at Disney-MGM Studios at 10 a.m. Thursday.

That was 16 year old Brad who was sitting in that seat. Talk about the right place at the right time!
The Fouches were staying at Disney’s All Star Resort, and Thursday night was going to be their last until they got a chance to make Disney World history by being the first family to stay in the Cinderella Suite. Congratulations to the Fouches for being the lucky winners!

Magical Makeover Transforming Cinderella’s Castle For “Suite Dreams” Beginning In Late January 2007

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — For decades, Walt Disney World guests have dreamed of spending the night in Cinderella Castle — a night when, as the clock strikes 12, the magic doesn’t end. And during “The Year of a Million Dreams,” a 15-month celebration, the dream will finally come true for lucky guests following a magical transformation within the Magic Kingdom landmark.

Unused space originally envisioned as in-park accommodations for the Disney family is being transformed into Cinderella Castle Suite — a place where lucky Walt Disney World guests will spend a dream-come-true night beginning in late January 2007.

Eligible guests will be selected as part of the unique Disney Dreams Giveaway, which began Oct. 1, 2006. For the castle stay, a Walt Disney World guest at a park or Downtown Disney will be selected randomly by early in the afternoon most days beginning in late January. The guest and up to five members of their party will begin their dream-come-true night that evening at Cinderella’s Royal Table, the popular restaurant located in Cinderella Castle. (Because the Castle stay requires same-day use, mail-in winners will be awarded a prize of comparable value.)

After the rest of the Magic Kingdom guests have headed home, these lucky guests can keep the castle lights burning brightly well into the night, wrapping themselves in the cozy comforts of their dream suite — a salon, bedchamber and bathroom off of a private marble-floored lobby some four stories above the surrounding Magic Kingdom, replete with rich details befitting the 17th century fairytale and the French chateaus that inspired the design of Cinderella Castle:

Fluffy feather comforters beneath the regal canopy draping of two queen beds … A cut-stone bedchamber floor inspired by the mosaic art masterpiece that adorns the castle’s breezeway entrance to Fantasyland … … A parlor sofa that invites kicking off the shoes and curling up to read a chapter beneath a vaulted ceiling of the salon … Rich, wood-paneled walls, stained-glass windows, and glimpses of the familiar gray castle stone.

While the idea of having living quarters inside Cinderella Castle dates to the time when Walt Disney World Resort was being planned, until now the space has been a backstage area — essentially a blank canvas for a creative team from Walt Disney Imagineering. In the fashion of a Disney attraction, Cinderella Castle Suite is emerging regally from their meticulous research and design skills.

“The architecture of the castle, the Cinderella story and the suite are all interwoven,” said Stephen Silvestri, the Walt Disney Imagineering show producer/director who is leading a team of designers and craftsmen in the dream makeover. “We want our guests to feel as though they are inside our castle but also immersed within the fantasy realm of the Cinderella story.”

In the lobby of the suite, guests will discover a design of the fairytale pumpkin coach in the marble floor inlay. A memorable artifact from the story — perhaps the famous glass slipper — will adorn a cove. And through the doorway, the bedchamber and salon are appointed with furnishings in the style of the era of “the Louies,” as Silvestri refers to the French rulers of the period inspiring the castle and Cinderella story. Nooks showcase sculpted pieces, clocks and porcelain all befitting the period. Doors are richly detailed; the walls are covered with wood panels and wall coverings. In the bathroom, hand-decorated copper basins sit atop the vanity, recalling a time when fresh water was carried to the bedchamber.

Despite all the careful attention to centuries-old details, the amenities of the Cinderella Castle Suite are definitely 21st century. There’s a lavish garden tub plus a shower. There are also wheelchair accessible bathroom and bedroom facilities and elevator access to the suite. As for a 17th-century-style painting above a regal fireplace: it frames a modern 21st-century flat-screen television.

“We want to balance the practical realities within the fantasy place to make the experience truly a dream-come-true for our guests,” Silvestri said.

During “The Year of a Million Dreams” Celebration Disney To Award A Million-Plus Magical Dreams

Official Press Release

Disney Dreams Giveaway

From an overnight stay inside Cinderella Castle to a visit to Walt Disney’s Main Street, U.S.A. apartment to a Dream FASTPASS badge, dreams big and small will come true at Disneyland and Walt Disney World resorts as part of the Disney Dreams Giveaway during “The Year of a Million Dreams,” a 15-month celebration of the individual dreams of Disney park guests.

The first-of-its-kind celebration, which began Oct. 1, 2006, features the debut of an incredible lineup of new attractions and entertainment at Walt Disney World and Disneyland resorts, plus new ways for guests to customize their Disney park experience.

And for the first time, Disney will award more than a million dreams — both large and small, including many money-can’t-buy experiences — to eligible guests and mail-in participants selected through a random process as part of the unique Disney Dreams Giveaway.

“Throughout this incredible celebration, special dreams and unique experiences once thought impossible will be awarded by our cast every day,” said Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. “Disney parks are always the place where dreams come true — but even more so during ‘The Year of a Million Dreams’. ”

The “impossible” includes the creation of over-the-top, overnight experiences for winning guests at both East and West Coast resorts: a royal suite inside Cinderella Castle at Walt Disney World Resort and a Mickey Mouse Penthouse at Disneyland Resort, opening late January 2007 and early December 2006, respectively.

A day of royal treatment will end with a night of enchantment inside Cinderella Castle for a different lucky guest most nights throughout 2007. Cinderella Castle Suite, now under construction at Magic Kingdom, will allow the winning Disney guest to stay that night inside the park and enjoy a view shared only by Tinker Bell. The lavishly decorated suite will be located in a space originally planned as an in-park apartment for the use of the Disney family.

And for lucky Disneyland guests, most nights starting in December, the all-new Mickey Mouse Penthouse at Disneyland Hotel will pour on the Mickey charm including magical views overlooking both Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure parks. The day they are awarded this dream, guests will enjoy an extraordinary penthouse decorated in All Things Mickey, with finishing touches by none other than Minnie Mouse herself.

In addition, during the 15-month celebration, other Disney dreams both large and small will be awarded in the Disney Dreams Giveaway, such as:

  • Traveling to each Disney resort around the world to serve as grand marshal in a Disney parade.
  • A variety of unique Disney vacation experiences.
  • Admission to special events and other extraordinary experiences in the Disneyland and Walt Disney World parks.
  • A Dream FASTPASS badge to enjoy some of Disney’s most popular attractions.
  • Exclusive pin and lanyard sets.

Can’t be in the parks? You may still have a dream-come-true through a mail-in entry (details at disneypark.com/rules). For example, mail-in winners could win prizes such as the Disney Vacation Club membership, grand marshal of a Disney parade around the world, exclusive trading pins or Dream Mouse Ears. Some prizes, such as the Castle and Mickey Mouse Penthouse stay, require same-day use, so mail-in winners will receive a prize of comparable value.
